AN ECOLOGICAL MODERN RESIDENCE

The design concept for the residence for Mr. Taylor and Mr. Walsh are the abstract paintings from the “VISIONS” series by Ashley Holmes as it emphasizes a neutral palette and shows naturalism as well as modernism which are based on their preferences and hobbies. To achieve this, the aesthetic of the space includes wider common areas that welcome plenty of natural lighting and modern appliances and features that bring modernity to the house.

The spatial relationship of the residence incorporates universal design which allows easy transition from one area to another. The goal of the residence is to create a comfortable and accessible living space for the clients and their guests by incorporating all of their preferences in a higher end complex. As for the layout of the space, the foyer connects with a hallway that leads to more private areas such as the bedrooms and the studio. The foyer also has open entrances to more major public spaces such as the dining area, kitchen, and living area. Some areas, such as the foyer and the living areas, include recessed ceilings for more lighting and depth to the space.

TAOIST TEMPLE: A PLACE OF WORSHIP

The Taoist Temple: A Place of Worship is inspired by the characteristics of the Ying Yang. This concept references to the balance and co-existence of things such as good and bad, light and dark, sun and moon, fire and water, etc. These opposites work together in perfect harmony. The Ying Yang concept is demonstrated in the space through different light variations, organic lines, and the overall balance of the design while evoking a sense of harmony and inner peace with the believers that will help them achieve their religious goals.
The purpose of Taoism is to achieve harmony and union with nature, pursue spiritual immortality, being virtuous and continue self-development. Ceremonies usually involve purifications, meditation, chanting and playing instruments. These rituals bring harmony to the cosmos, the human society, and the inner world of human individuals.

STROZIER: THE NEW HEART OF TALLAHASSEE

Strozier Library is located in the center of the FSU campus with a front view to Landis Green. The goal of the project was to bring adjustments to spacial organization and eliminate pathway congestion throughout high traffic areas of the library. The Theory of Proxemics and Territoriality was used to achieve this. This theory evaluates personal space requirements in educational settings. Maintaining a certain level of comfort in a space is dependent on the spatial planning and organization of furniture.

Concept

The redesign concept of Strozier Library will be based on Kintsugi, the art of highlighting imperfections. This concept will also tie into the history of Tallahassee and specifically reflect the transformation of the warehouse district. Since many structural forms in the space must remain intact, building off what already exists will transform the space into an area that is stimulating and comfortable to spend extended periods of time in.

Proposed Reception Area

Shows a mural created by Street Art Tallahassee at Merv’s Melt Shop called “Coexist.”
Circulation Perspective

The ultimate goal of the concept incorporates the art history of the Tallahassee community as Strozier: The New Heart of Tallahassee through painted murals and art which will brings FSU students and the community closer together.

THE DRAG STAGE: THEATER DESIGN

This theater design is based on the play, The Drag by Mae West. Located in the grand New York City, the two different sets will depict Act One and Act Three, Scene One. Focusing on gay male sexuality, the play not only connects to societal topics relevant in modern day, but also speaks upon the transcending ideals and topics present during the 1920s (Boise State University). Ahead of its time, West makes a bold statement regardless of the surrounding controversy. The key concepts around secrecy, disguise, and concealment is summarized to focus on the dichotomy between betrayal and deception. The overaching goal is to create a design representing the two juxtaposing thinking way, hinting at the femininity hidden under a masculine design.

Act Three, Scene One

An evening at Rolly Kingsbury’s House focused on the Art Deco style and the incorporation of stylized floral fashions. The spiral staircase insinuates the grand feeling of the ball.

Group project with Celia Pena and Yukee Wang.

Act One

An afternoon in Dr. James Richmond’s mansion, specifically in the library of his office. Focused on Victorian Revival style with Art Nouveau elegant furniture and interior decorations.

SWEET CREATURE DESIGN PATTERN

The concept of the design is based on Sweet Creature by Harry Styles which describes the love and hardships of a relationship. The design was inspired by the following lyrics of the song: “I know when we started / Just two hearts in one home / It gets harder when we argue / We’re both stubborn.” The lyrics describe two people in love that go through arguments but still love each other. The design incorporates organic shapes and forms which symbolize the sweet folksy vocals and guitar sound of the melody and harmony of the piece.

Representation of Elements

Kravet Design of Distinction
The elements of the design are a rose in the center which represents the home and love that these two people have for each other, the thorns are the representation of the arguments and hardships of their relationship, and the two butterflies on opposite sides of the rose illustrate the two people in the relationship. The finished product fulfills the concept of Sweet Creature as it describes the sweet, romantic, and complicated feeling this song creates.

CHARRETTE 2022

This charrette was required to address the purpose of the hidden place, the users who inhabit the place, the pathway leading to it, and the means to access its entrance. That’s how SEVEN was created. According to legend, in the 1960s Florida State University’s Bellamy building was supposed to be part of Duke University’s campus. The architect mixed up the construction plans for FSU’s building with Duke’s and sent the wrong building materials to FSU’s campus. With this mishap, Bellamy is the only non-brick structure on campus, but that’s not the only thing that makes it unique. Duke had planned to use the underground of their new building to house SEVEN, their underground secret society, composed of Duke’s elite Professors and Scientists. But the research had to continue, therefore, Duke continued with their plans to build their underground lab under Bellamy on FSU’s campus to research the transmutation of base metals into gold. Only Duke’s elite are invited to join SEVEN. When the bell rings at midnight, the members, the members of SEVEN go to the Rober Manning’s books, a secret tunnel unlocks and leads the members down a set of stairs into SEVEN’s underground lab. But is that also just a legend, or is it a reality? That’s up to you to decide.
